Resilience, recovery and self defence
Every monday night I am assaulted, thrown on the ground and suffer pain.I actually pay for this privilege, don't like missing and also do it to others. To clarify it is a self defence class for a martial art called Aikido.Mental attitude is a very significant aspect of training.Looking back to when I started the class there are some metaphors with recovery
- I had to develop resilience. In life no one can avoid the knocks and difficulties and the same with Aikido. Through time I have learnt to take the physical 'knocks' but get up the next morning ready to face the new day - the thumps I took the previous night
are over and dealt with.
- A survivor mentality as opposed to a victim mentality. My mental approach is that whatever the situation I will survive and learn from it.
- Self defence - through learning new skills I know how to defend myself - no one else can do it for me. Part of recovery is developing self defence in our thinking - no one else can think for us.
Hi Ian and Paula,
Thank you so much for your post. It really is so similar to recovery.
Today, let's give that condition one helluva roundhouse kick to the head :-)
