Learning from Lanzarote
I was totally honoured when my daughter asked me to accompany her to Lanzarote; although we have a very close relationship, the request itself, indicated progress.
We planned the trip in the normal fashion, bought the suncream etc. & laid down a few ground rules; we were both to be free agents - no pressure!!!!
I can honestly say I didn't really understand the purpose of the trip, other than it would be a week long opportunity for some intensive therapy & that in itself, was more than reason enough. My clever daughter advised me not to try analyse any of it too much in advance & that we should just go in faith & trust that all would be well.
For those who have never been to Lanzarote, it's not just another holiday destination. A friend of mine told me that the island has a reputation for being a place of healing, related to the light/levels of year-round sunshine. I still don't understand it but I certainly now do believe it!
During the week I met some incredible people, witnessed amazing courage & learned many things about myself & my daughter, which will, I hope, help me to continue supporting her to the best of my ability.
I found it was possible to switch off from the worries of everyday life, including the stresses of living with someone with an ED.
Meeting other parents in similiar situations was hugely comforting; my contact list now includes the names of several friends made in Lanzarote. I hope we will maintain those friendships & support one another into the future.
We enjoyed the sun on our skin, walks along the beach, cups of coffee in places with breathtaking views of the sea & even a little retail therapy!
We laughed, we cried, we argued, we explored, we chatted, for hours on end....
I watched as my daughter wove her way through all sorts of discoveries & realisations. I waited in the wings as she dived headfirst, into situations that challenged her & forced her to confront issues that have caused her so much pain in the past. What emerged was what I have always known, that this beautiful young woman who is my daughter, has the strength, desire & courage to be whatever she wants to be & to live the amazing life that she so richly deserves.
Thanks so much to everyone who contributed to the experience, especially the incredible team from marino! Love to all those who shared the experience. I'm totally in awe of all you guys & honoured to have spent a week in your company.
