I had to count to ten before I posted this.... Briefly: just saw ad on tv (twice) - it started off talking about some epidemic that caused cancer and other illnesses and then said that the disease was called 'over weight' and to take out our measuring tapes and start measuring our bodies. Ok that's all I'm going to say.

Now it made me angry and I understand the idea behind it is health but its message isn't healthy.

What can we do to curb the 'fat' talk?

What can we do to contribute to our society (friends, family, workplaces) to help give a constructive message about having vitality, how food is fuel, how we can connect with our bodies and trust them, nourishment.

I've found that people are a lot more interested in vitality and positive nourishment than anything else. I tell people about udos oil a lot and they are intrigued by it. I even know four people who went and got it.

How can we encourage balanced conversation? How can we channel our frustration and refocus a conversation? I used to find it soooooo awkward and scary when people would talk about the latest fad.... Now it's so easy to change the topic and people never realise what you're doing - they're a lot happier to talk about how great udos is for you for example :)

I think this type of message will always be out there so we can accept it and instead of reacting create our own message.

We all have power to make change.

X

standardization and norm...

I know exactly what you mean, Jojo, what a silly add really...
I think it was out already a few months ago for a while, and we had a great discussion here with regards to the silliness of the measuring tape and things alike...
Like, how can we standardise a size of a million of very unique bodies in a million of different shapes and sizes???!!!
If it wasn't so serious it would make a great joke, wouldn't it?!?
This is what I do with it when I come across people talking about it. throw out your measuring tape, or if you really want to keep it, well use it for making your own clothes, use it creatively, right?
In a way I think it is just as silly as measuring cucumbers and apples and pears, and strawberries and ..... and anything outside the norm is declared "bad", no matter how great the flavour, the texture, the aroma...
Keep infiltrating your conversations with positive talk, like that you can personally reach the people around you.

Love,
xxx Robin xxx

sick jokes

Hello Jojo, I sooo agree with you, these adds are making me so angry. When I heard it for the first time I actually could not believe that they were serious, I thought it was some bad joke. I do not know where these people(experts) get these ideas. It is a typical proof how people do not understand. I know that severely underweight or severely overweight is not good for the body, but I never did see anyone getting healthy with measuring tapes.
I think the only way we can go about it to realise how little understanding there is and try to bring more new knowledge until some one will listen, I think people with personally experiences of emotional eating needs to speak up more what does help them and what is unhelpful.
I hope one day we can see one change.
Thank you for you post, I think to realise and express how we feel about it, can lessen the negative effect of these “jokes”

There is always a solution…:):):)

Hi Jojo, Great post! I

Hi Jojo,

Great post! I couldn't agree with you more about this one. I become so angry when I see this advert on the tv, but like you said , I too must count to 10 and calm myself and ask myself "ok, well this has annoyed me, but rather then let the frustration take over I ask myself what is it that I can do?"

At the moment I feel society's values have changed so much in the last while, and many of them negatively. What many of us priorities now and find value in sometimes is worth taking a look at and re-evaluating.

Like you said jojo we can redirect these conversations we find ourselves in the middle of alot of the time, be it at work, college, school or anywhere. Or sometimes I have just let them have their toxic conversation but ensure that I am protecting myself from it and make sure not too get sucked in. We must take responsibility for our views and values and rather then get frustrated or upset about ads such as these we ca make the choice to put our energy and strength into ourselves and what we believe in.

Bit by bit we can be the ones who can make a change :)

Thanks for the great post jojo!

Jacqueline
