Gok Wan.
Hey,
I was just watching the late late at home with my famiily. Gok wan came on & i didn't know he was going on it so was bit of a suprise. I heard about his tv show but had only seen a small bit of it, but really thought it was brillant. He really believed in dressing the women to suit themselves, he talks about real women, embraces trying make them feel confident & good about who they are.
I didn't know anything about his past though so i have to say i got a bit of a shock. When he started to mention his struggles with ED & bullying i tensed up. Because my family were in the room i felt really akward. I thought oh crap not another celeb who is so called 'recoverded' but obviously in complete denial. My hands started to sweat & i didn't know whether to leave, change the channel or just sit there.
I decided to just sit and if it started to go down the wrong direction leave. However i was pleasntly suprised. Although he didn't mention much about the thoughts part he made it more clear that it really was a false illusion and ED makes you forget about everything else in your life and all you can focus on is trying to be thin or lose weight. He said because he believed something it became his reality. The things he said i could just really relate with. I found him very open and honest. He mentioned how he found it difficult to bring all his past up in his book, but i felt not because he was ashamed of it but because it was an emotional time.
I found him very inspirational i thought one celeb who seems to be just normal. Now i cant say if he really is recoverded i dont know, he did say he got help & from the way he spoke i assumded he was. I felt like god yah know what he knows himself, he accepts himself he's comfortable and i found him so likeable because he was real. I felt a buzz of positive energy from watching him.
I really enjoyed the interview. One point he made was just so lovely. He said i refuse to give into the fact that all women should look a certain way. I like real women. He said the only example i can give is of the rose. He said if there's a real red rose and its a bit witherded a few petals have fallen off but is real and there's a plastic rose, just plastic may look perfect but thats it he said i know which one i'd pick the real rose i dont want a plastic. I thought yeah what use would a fake one be it wouldnt smell nice, the texture wouldnt be the same it wouldnt be real. I don't know if anybody else saw it but i thought what an inspiration. He really spreads the word from what i picked up; be confident in who you are be comfortable with your body dont try to buy into the false illusion of you have to look a certain way.
Something else i loved how he mentioned how he went to drama school because he originally wanted to be an actor. He said i never thought my past would actually help other people. That from all the hard times he went through he actually is helping people from it and teaching people to love themselves and their body's just the way they are. I really loved the interview & him. I'd recommend anybody to watch it. At the beginnning i thought oh god i dont know if this is going the right way, but by the end i was in awe of him. x
Same here, I had the same experience... well a little bit different as I am on the other side...
Initially I was a bit anxious about the picture he would paint about ed, because in the beginning he only described his own appearance and the bullying...and I thought: "Oh dear, watch your lingo, boy. Watch the words that you are using..." Also, I don't agree with showing any kind of before-after photos, it is not necessary.
But as it went on he became more and more real and authentic and open and he did strike me as a positive, lovely, jolly, honest and extremely caring person.
I didn't feel he tried to hide anything or was acting in any way, no, he was straight forward and not afraid of reactions he might get...and his honesty is winning people's hearts I'd say.
I love him saying he wanted to be an example: If I can do this, so can everybody else!!! That's just what I say, and all the other recovered people out there, and this is a great message to spread: HOPE!!!
Sure, I think he still could learn more about the power of the word and stuff, I am not 100% a fan of TV shows like his, but at the same time, he is very kind, warm and caring and if that is what he can teach others, to be kind, warm and caring to each other, then what the heck...
Love,

Oh wow lmb I live this post absolutely love it, wish I saw him as the red rose is such a gr8 way of looking at it versus plastic rise, a thght came in2 my head last night, for so long I hav tried to be better, do better, be thinner blah blah blah fit myself inti wat I thght everyone else wanted but war if I just tried to be me, eat if I really embraced bring me, isn't that really way I'd unique, no mote going against nature x
Thanks for the tip,
I must have a look at it. Sounds great - paricularly like the analogy of the rose.

Wow LMB, it sounds like his interview was amazing i actually love to watch him and his program on channel 4 as he treats women so nice and his words are inspirational.
Isnt it create to think that other people can benefit from what we are going through and also that we can come out the otherside of ED....
Glad you enjoyed the interview i totally missed it as hubby wanted to watch something else ahahah
You should try watch his repeats on E4 if you havent watched them...
Have a great saturday
Love Sonya...

Thanks for the replys. Yeah i really loved the rose anology too. Yeah gonna try & see his show thanks sonya.
I do agree with Robin on the start of the show just to let people know. I'd actually nearly maybe skip it, or the parts you find disturbing if you can on the rte player thing.
I think the way tubridy started to ask him stupid questions based on apperance, i thought crap crap & the the uncessary photo. I think the show may have scooped that out though not sure if he had much impact on it. I Wouldn't usually watch much of them interviews esp when they have had troubles with themselves as i think some of the interviewres can ask very innappropriate questions & obviously do not have any awareness.
I agree he probably could use the power of word a bit better at the start but as the show went further on i started to just really enjoy him & thought he actually came across as a very positive person. I loved the line aswell- if i can do it so can you. It defintly gets a lot better towards the middle and end. Personally i enjoyed the best part of it & i suppose took out the postive out of it. My family said the same at the start they were thinking 'oh oh' but by the end they thought he was great. x
