Personally, I feel texting is

Personally, I feel texting is good for messages such as 'I'm running 5 mins late, be there shortly' type of thing, but not for more intimate matters. As I have been bruised in the past by people using texting inappropriately, it is something I feel very strongly about. My mum told me by text that my aunt was going for an op and was suspected to be cancer - the worst thing dad ever did was teach mum how to text, - thankfully in the past year or so she has calmed down with her texting. When she first learned how to text she was really like a kid in a sweetshop. Yes, some texts I appreciate having got from certain people in my life - when going through various transitions, such as when I was made redundant last year, I got so many phone calls, texts and emails from friends, so there are obviously advantages, but in the whole scheme of things nothing can beat one on one interaction in a more personal setting.

I agree with Mystique,

I agree with Mystique, texting has its place..but in terms of relatonships i think that the message can often be interpreted the wrong way in a way someone especially who is sensitive may overanalyse and confuse with the real meaning of the text. I do feel that one misses the feeling and emotion of one on one and in seeing a persons reactions. Its a way of keeping in contact but should not b a way of replacing physical connection, how do u really say how ur feeling in a text??

The more I grow up, the more

The more I grow up, the more I hate texting. Ya it "should" really be used for direct messages like, "Meet you at 5pm" "I want to go on call to work Thursday".. Personally I hate mobile phones, texting is becoming like facebook overused and people communicate more through this than forming real relationships. Personally I am a culprit and I am making more of a conscious effort to reply to messages short and to the point and not to have conversations. Messages get mixed up and people alwasys take texts up wrong. I feel that even for me in the past it meant I didnt have to surround myself with people physically as texting was a means of a false relationship. I went out with someone for a long time and our main means of coversation became texting hence so much was misinterpurted. If we had actually spoken more verbally or being honest then it would have been easier. I believe that all this texting, facebook is isolating people more and I know as I have felt like this, hidding behind texts and false images rather than being real

I feel a little out of the

I feel a little out of the loop with this one. I don't text very much. I have in the past though used texts a lot in relationships with people. My day was often ruined because the measure of my worth to someone could lie on whether I received a text from them or not. Looking back they were just illusions of relationships and ways of filling time. They gave me the illusion that I had other connections besides the condition

I suppose I would argue that something as small as texting wouldn't ruin a good relationship and if a relationship is based on texting it probably wouldn't be substantial enough to last anyway even if texting technology didn't exist. if you want to be with someone nothing will stop you. If you're bored and want to fill your life with fantasies and excitement and distractions you can clutch onto texting and technologies. You don't have to deal with the physical side of the relationship ( that can be an attractive option if you feel bad about yourself and your appearance) also you don't have to be confronted with feedback from body language that might change how you interact. it depends on where you are in life and what you are looking for

I do think sometimes pple can spend a lot of time texting even when they are in the company of others and I think that's rude and also a little sad as it can be a symbol of emptiness and the inability to really connect. Ultimately it's stands between you and forming deeper relationships with those in your environment because you are constantly checked out & I can see if a person is chained to technology how that would be annoying being on a date with someone like that. Techology can give you the illusion of connecting but really it's a way out of your life. It's a means of total disconnection. although I accept it can be a different experience for everyone

I personally try and keep it real now. I won't spend time talking to someone on facebook that I wouldn't spend time with in "the real world"

There's only us. There's only this.

Hi all, and many thanks for

Hi all, and many thanks for sharing your views. I think like everything else texting has its place in certain circumstances and in moderation!

advantages; speed, cost, accruacy (although one could argue against this because of the language used in texts),convenient, discreet,

disadvantages; lack of clarity, time delay between receiving and replying to text, misinterpretation, lack of personal contact,

Does texting ruin romance/relationships?
I would hate to even imagine a situation where texting would be the dominant form of communication. I think Butterfy made a great point about not been able to express ones feelings/emotions.

However since our team have to oppose the motion I better try and focus on the positive side of texting! Faerie Cake your point about texting not ruining a relationship which is solid is very helpful to me.I was researching it on the internet and some studies argue texting actually allows relationships to grow stronger between people as its low cost and convenience enables more regular instant communication.

Another thing which springs to mind is the story of Romeo and Juliet. I wonder if
texting was available would it have prevented the tragic death of the star crossed lovers? (as they would not have had to wait so long to receive the letter)

Sometimes it can be nice to read over a text message from someone special which made you feel good. Also when the message is wrote it may enable one to think about the content of the discussion rather than forcing one to think on the spot as in face to face conversation.

Oh I dont really like this topic!!!driving me crazy!!! many thanks for all the suggestions.
