Yoga practice for women...

Hello to all the yoga lovers...
 
I have found yoga very helpful through my recovery, even though I had a long break during the time I was studying in Maynooth. I find my teacher here in Donegal very good, she always makes sure that people do not over stretch or twist or hurt themselves, she pays attention to everybody's abilities and needs and works with a lot of props to support her students in positions they are not able yet to do without. She also explains the different positions and how they work in the body, and she pays a lot of attention to women in particular and their hormonal changes during the month. The last time I was with her she told me about the following article:

It really explains very well why and how women need to adjust their yogic parctice according to their hormonal changes throughout the month, it really all makes a lot of sense. I went to the yoga class last

I went to the yoga class last night, and found the class and instructor both fab - nothing like the yoga classes I had previously done years ago.  One had been with Tony Quinn, and found that during the class they were trying to flog their products, which was not why I was going to yoga in the first inst, and the other class I tried, I just didn't feel I connected with - the second one was run by one of the gym instructors at the gym I used to go to, and think maybe she had more of an aerobics way of teaching it or something.

Anyway, found the instructor last night very aware of everyone's abilities, and only to go as far as we were comfortable with.  I did have to stop one of the movements at one point, as it did pinch my lower back (the side I had the trouble with earlier this year), however was able to modify it then, so that was good. 

The style this instructor does is hatha-flow, and she focused more on the movements, rather than the meditation aspect, which suited me perfectly, as I tend to do my own meditation before I head to bed at night anyway.  I am definitely glad that I went to the yoga class.

Hi Cara,

Don't mind at all - I believe the person you refer to is the person I contacted.  She rang me back re classes, and is waiting till she has enough interest before starting the next class.  Talking to her on the phone, she seems to have the same philosophy of me on mind-body and karmic (past life) connections. 

I also spoke to one of the pilates instructors too, who would be my second choice if the yoga doesn't work out, pending on what day, time etc it will be on.

Hope u dont mind me replying to your comment, just on ur sciatica, you would be better to get in touch with a yoga therapist, yoga instructors may not have as much info on specific probelms, in the dublin holistic centre there is a very experienced one if you want her name let me know,

Hi Mary,

I would echo what Cara has said above, in that discussing this with both your doctor and therapist would be paramount.  I would also encourage you to let the yoga instructor know about the ED, and even though this may feel uncomfortable, if there are exercises that would not be advisable at the moment, she would be able to offer alternate options and/or modifications. 

I am currently waiting for a yoga instructor to get in touch with me for when her next round of classes commence - due to having had a couple of back issues (work related) over the past two years, feel this, for me personally, would help with that.  Had a combination of back sciatica and a couple of disks bulging which were jutting out and hitting the nerve earlier this year, and will do anything not to have that type of pain again.

I am also in recovery but am a yoga teacher so i hope i can give u a bit of sound advice. I am not a therapist so i would think it is best for you to check this one out with ur doctor and therapist, especial;ly if you are underweight and/or if you used exercise as a behaviour. I still have to be very careful in terms of exercise as it was my major behaviour in the condition. However, in terms of osteoporosis exercise in some forms is important but again it must be im sure done for teh right reasons and if checked out. Yoga is great for relaxation, for body mind connection, sleep, stretch, and can be a gentle or vigorous form of exercise. May i suggest that u avoid asthanga, bikram and some stronger forms of yoga and look for a gently beginners hatha class  or a fav of mine for relaxation is yin yang yoga.
