SUCCESS IN STUDIES
This time of the year many people are doing different types of exams, it could be very stressful time, but please do not worry – here is little help from Iceberg - something what worked for many people in past…it will work for you too...
Happy studying…
Marie
Think positively about yourself – what you have done and who you are!
You must want to succeed – not just hope or wish for success.
Learn from setbacks (do not call them failures, you never fail – you just learn sometimes that you need to study more) – we all have them!
1. Start today! Start with something fairly difficult, even something you do not like. Achievement will increase your confidence.
2. Start organising your time, setting targets, making timetables.
3. Little and often!
4. Condition yourself to study by sitting in the same quit place. Use comfortable chair, spacious desk, switch off TV, radio or personal stereo, they might affect your understanding
5. Positive attitude.
6. Give yourself a treat. Reward yourself with interesting task, or time off, after difficult ones.
7. Get someone to help.
The effective learner…
- knows that s/he can work smarter without necessarily working harder
- set realistic goal and stick to them
- has a routine for study (the same times each day)
- has a study plan, a timetable for study and revision
- discusses understanding or study with a teacher
- can easy identify the key points of notes taken in class
- visualise or call up mental pictures of the topics. This is very powerful method of, learning, appreciating and remembering.
- use many senses as possible
- write summaries, formulae, history dates etc. on cards for quick revision.
- is able to relax, switch off after a study session
- know when to work, when to play and does it all three
More important than studying hard is to have god study strategy
Principle of learning:
- HAVE A GO
- MAKE A MISTAKE
- CORRECT IT
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE YOURSELF!
You might not believe it, but relaxation is a key element in learning!

Exams :-)
Something I'd add is joining a study group with college friends may not be the best idea as you may end up chatting away in the library! Also stay away from people who are worrying and stressing about the exams, it might make you paranoid that they're studying something you're not. Once you know what needs to be covered on the paper, you're probably best off studying by yourself.
If your head is getting scrambled from trying to cram, going for a walk to clear your head might help you out a bit more and going to sleep early. Some people in my class who started cramming at 4am ended up being exhausted for their exam and not performing their best.
A school teacher years ago once said that when she was in school they weren't allowed study the day before an exam, they were brought on walks by a river, through a forest etc. I think it depends on the exam... for some, it was more of a case of there being not much more that I could do the night before so going for a walk was better... for others, I did need to re-read some important things the day before.
Don't blow an exam out of proportion too... yes it's important but it's only an exam... I'm not saying this to undermine your achievements but going in with a cool head is alot better than being overly stressed and worried about the exam.
Watch your caffeine... once in the morning of an exam I drank particularly strong coffee so got the shakes between the caffeine and the nerves... I got through it in the end though :-)
I totally agree with positivity and visualisation too... instead of affirming "I don't know it" "I haven't studied enough" etc.... why not give yourself credit for what you do know? Again, hanging around with people who are saying "Oh I didn't study at all, I don't know anything" might lower your confidence too. (People can get stressed around exam times even if they're usually cool enough about college work)
One of the best pieces of advice I got about exams from a speaker in my school was to do mini tests the night before. Say if you have to know a list of headings for the exam, be able to write out that list without the book the night before. It's simple and amazingly effective. I'm a big fan of headings and bullet points too... I think that a natural flow of information can come when you learn of a list of headings.
Take deep breaths!
"You can do it!!!!"
Best of luck everyone during this time.

i agree with carol her when i was studying for my exams this time last year i had different topics divided into different headings. forst off i learnt the headings in the order they came then learnt the info in each that way it helped me rememeber what i needed to know in the order i needed to know.
i also use q-cards, with headings in a mind map style for before the exam.
for question you could kind of learn of or prepare for in advance i would alos write the first sentence on the card for that last reminder the morning of the exam.
Group study is great too especially to do notes and maybe learna bit about stuff you arent sure off. it also builds confidence like it shows you what you have to offer others therefore makes you feel better about what you already know.
when studying i recommend using notes write out your own in your own words it can take time but it is way more benifecial than learning froma book.stuff in your own words is far easier to remember too.
we also made up lil saying, ill see if i can remember any.... say a process has three steps and the first begins with the letter a the second with b and the third with c, we would make up a rhyme or phrase we could remember with three words the first staring with a , the second with b and the third with c. i alwys has a lot of different steps to remember for different topics so i always knew what each step was for wach as i had a differnt rhyme to help me rememever.... hope some of that made sense and that i didint totally over complicate it.
lastly sleep oh my god! ya ned it esp if ya cram like me! serial crammer so i am ha the night before however ill go to bed early and then get up an hout earlier than i have to to read over everything once just to rienforce it in my head.
then on the morning i stay away from ppl find a spot i can be alone and stay calm.
anyway good luck everyone. an exam is just an exam once over its over no need for analysis or postmortns . and take it from me once you have dont the work you can do the exam. you will be surprised what comes back to you when you stay calm.
what else helps:
highliters i defo remembered more with colour , rescue remedy to calm the nerves, short walks or tea breaks.
